Today is the best day and the only one I choose to focus on! My priority is to keep life for my daughter as simple and as innocent as possible. I spent the first few years of her life working like a crazy woman as a children’s book writer and publisher. Ah, but life has a funny way of grounding you when you least expect it, let alone understand it.

I’ve been shed of pride, security and possessions; yet I’ve gained humility, learned what it’s like not to “be in control” and to surrender – all of which has led to a greater sense of meaning and peace than ever before. I’m truly “free at last” (even with what others may say are huge burdens).

Yes, these past few years have been the most incredible on many levels. They’ve pushed me down and showed me what I always believed was important, yet somehow couldn’t capture. I get it now and am more encouraged and hopeful every day! Yes, I live life as an “exclamation point” and wouldn’t have it any other way!

Years ago while going through a challenging time of a different sort, I was asked the very unique question while in the midst of what I call a “self-pity rant”, “Elena do you know how steel is made?” (Huh? Really, in the midst of my meltdown?!) This wonderful soul began to tell me and it all came down to “the hotter the fire, the stronger the steel.” I never forget that or the person who told me. I often reflect on this and it gets me through another day. I’m going to be one amazing piece of steel one day I can tell you that!
